WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS?
AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRE AND PROBIOTICS?
Two in synergy – the perfect duo to support your gut health and well-being.
Why is gut health important?
Past studies have identified links between gut health and the immune system, mood, mental health, autoimmune diseases, endocrine disorders, skin conditions, and even cancer. They call it your [ second brain ].
A good gut will show through your mood, your skin/flesh, how you perceive the world, your thoughts and how you function. Ever wondered why when you eat “bad”, you feel sluggish and slow.. and everything’s just a mess. Well, your pre and probiotics help to support and manage this.
Prebiotics and probiotics are both beneficial to gut health, but they serve different roles:
Prebiotics:
- Prebiotics are a type of nondigestible fiber that serve as food for probiotics, promoting the growth and activity of the “good” bacteria in the gut.
- Typically found in foods such as fruits, vegetables and legumes.
- Beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and lactobacill (probiotics) ferment the undigested insoluble fibres (prebiotics) once passed through the upper gastrointestinal tract
Probiotics:
- Probiotics are live microorganisms e.g. bacteria or yeast
- They are naturally found in fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and miso.
- Probiotics help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria by replenishing beneficial bacteria, promoting digestion, enhancing immune function, and potentially reducing the growth of harmful bacteria.
- Common probiotic strains include Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Saccharomyces boulardii.
In summary, prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that feed “good” bacteria in the gut, while probiotics are live microorganisms that confer health benefits when consumed.
MICROBIOME?
On average we have 100 trillion bacteria in our digestive tract.
The term ‘gut microbiome’ refers to the microorganisms living in your stomach and intestines.
While some microorganisms are harmful, they are all necessary to the healthy functioning of our physical and mental bodies.
